Congratulate Me
My spine won't let me walk
My arms don't like work much
My shoulder was smashed last year
I'm falling apart at the seams!
So you can congratulate me:
Today I have graduated
From a scooter to a wheelchair
A nice spiffy model with a little joy stick.
My grandson loves this new toy
Thinks it's the bees knees
Of toys for little boys
Who have grandmas who let them play!
Of course my new toy was costly
Not just money of course;
The anguish of the symbolism
Caused prolonged procrastination.
My loss of function and gain in pain
Has lead to this imposition -
But within a week I'll wonder
Why I demurred so long?
A wheelchair carries connotations
Of weakness, dependence, restriction;
But for me it will mean freedom
To move around without help.
So congratulate me today
On receipt of my new toy
Not only is my grandson happy
But so I am, in a way.
